Using Your Faith to Stay Motivated in Your Weight Loss Efforts
by Jane Sandwood
A study completed in 2012 found that of the individuals who make fitness or weight loss a New Year’s resolution, 73% give up their goals before achieving them. Because diet and exercise are part of so many areas of our lives, reaching weight loss goals can feel next to impossible at times. Between balancing family, volunteering, work, and extracurricular activities, eating well and exercising often get pushed to the bottom of your priority list.
Although you may experience many wins in your weight loss journey, it is almost certain that you’ll also experience a few bumps in the road. Since we’re imperfect people due to our sinful nature, no one can flawlessly reach their weight loss goals. If today has been one of those “bumps in the road,” take comfort in knowing that God always sees you as perfect because of the sacrifice Jesus made for us so long ago. As further proof of His love, let the following verses carry you through the most challenging parts of your weight loss journey.
1 Peter 3:3-4
“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
While this verse specifically mentions jewelry and clothing, it is also referring to the rest of your outward appearance. Having the “perfect” body and reaching your desired weight doesn’t define your beauty. Instead, the Bible says that a “gentle and quiet spirit” is of the greatest worth in God’s eyes.
James 1:2-4
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
One of the more common mistakes when trying to lose weight is setting unrealistic expectations. Thinking that you will be able to quickly and easily shed extra pounds sets you up for disappointment. This verse confirms that in this life, there will be “trials of many kinds.” From the time that Adam and Eve fell into sin, God said that there would be troubles, pain, and suffering in the world. He promises to always be with us during these earthly difficulties, and that one day, we will get to experience perfect peace. As you face adversity in reaching your weight loss goals, continue on with perseverance and the strength that only God can deliver.
Stay positive as you continue your weight loss journey.
