Why You Should Reward Your Success

January is typically the month that most people make resolutions and set goals. By the end of February, many people fail to meet or even forget these very goals. By March, we’re back to old habits.

As an experienced personal trainer, I’d work with clients to set SMART goals because who’d want to set dumb ones, right? We worked together to choose a long-term goal and then break it down into manageable pieces and weekly targets.

For example, one client wanted to lose 20 pounds by her son’s wedding in 3 months. This was realistic and gave her a goal of 1.5 pounds per week.

As we progressed, her problem wasn’t in losing the weight but in celebrating her loss up to that point. At five pounds lost she lamented that she still had 15 pounds to go. I had to repeatedly remind her to reward her success.

I suggested she buy herself some nice jewellery to wear at the wedding, take a bubble bath to sooth achy muscles and distress, and take the luxury to call a friend that she hadn’t talked to in a while. The important thing was that she needed to reward the success that she had achieved up to that point.

Rewarding your success, no matter how small, is positive reinforcement and sets you up to continue on the path to achieve the larger, longer-term goals. (tweet this)
